Teeth whitening in Johnstown, NY.

Two routes: a single in-office appointment for the fastest visible change, or custom take-home trays for a gradual lift on your own schedule. Either way, a dentist checks your teeth first and supervises the plan.

Dr. D'Addio explaining teeth whitening options to a patient at Dunning Family Dental in Johnstown, NY.

What whitening can and can't do.

Whitening lifts natural surface staining well. It does not change crowns, fillings, or veneers, and it has limits on intrinsic staining. We'll tell you what to realistically expect before you start.

In-office or take-home

When patients ask about whitening

The reasons patients ask about whitening.

Almost every whitening conversation begins with one of these. The right approach depends on your starting shade, the timing you're working with, and any existing dental work that would need to match.

Coffee, tea, or red wine staining

External staining from drinks, foods, and tobacco responds well to professional whitening. How much lighter teeth get varies from person to person, and we set realistic expectations before you start.

A wedding, reunion, or event coming up

If you have a specific date in mind, the in-office treatment lifts your shade in a single appointment. Plan ahead of the event so the color has time to settle.

Prone to sensitivity

Tell us before you start. Dr. D'Addio will talk through which route and schedule fits your teeth, and how to handle sensitivity if it shows up.

Maintenance after past whitening

Existing whitening fades over 6 months to 2 years depending on diet and habits. Custom trays from a previous whitening can be re-used for maintenance with fresh gel.

What we offer

Two professionally supervised options.

Both routes use clinically tested whitening agents at concentrations not available over the counter, and both are supervised by Dr. D'Addio for safety.

Honest pre-whitening exam

We confirm your teeth and gums are healthy enough for whitening, identify any existing dental work that won't change color, and set realistic expectations.

In-office whitening

A single appointment using a stronger gel with the gums protected. The fastest visible change.

Custom take-home trays

Trays made from impressions of your teeth, plus professional-strength gel, worn at home on a schedule we set with you.

Combined approach

Some patients start with in-office for a fast lift and use take-home trays to maintain or push the shade further. We discuss whether this makes sense for your goals.

Sensitivity management

Desensitizing toothpaste before treatment, lower-concentration gel options, and shorter wear times for sensitive teeth. Most sensitivity resolves within days of finishing.

Maintenance plan

After whitening, simple habits (rinse after coffee, regular cleanings, occasional touch-ups with trays) help the result last longer.

What to expect

How whitening works here.

Either path is straightforward. The right pick depends on your timeline and your sensitivity.

  1. 1

    Consultation

About 30 minutes. Dr. D'Addio reviews your teeth, sets realistic shade expectations, and recommends in-office vs take-home based on your situation. We can often whiten the same week.

  2. 2

    Treatment

In-office: one appointment with the gums protected and a stronger gel. Take-home: daily tray wear at home on the schedule we set.

  3. 3

    Result + maintenance

Final shade visible within a day or two of finishing. Any sensitivity is usually temporary. Your custom trays can be reused for touch-ups.

Insurance and cost

Using your benefits out of network.

Dunning is a fee-for-service practice. That does not mean you cannot use dental benefits here. Many patients do. You pay the practice at the visit, we submit the claim to most carriers as a courtesy, and your insurer sends reimbursement directly to you. Card, check, cash, HSA and FSA cards, and CareCredit are accepted. Medicaid and Fidelis are not.

Your plan, looked up first

Before work beyond a basic exam or cleaning, the front desk checks your plan and gives you a written estimate.

Claims filed as a courtesy

We submit the claim for you. Your insurer applies your plan's rules and makes the final benefit determination.

Common whitening questions

Questions about teeth whitening?

How much does professional teeth whitening cost in Johnstown?
Whitening fees depend on which option you choose. In-office whitening (a single appointment with stronger gel and gum isolation) is priced as a single procedure. Custom take-home trays plus a supply of professional-strength gel are priced separately and typically cost less upfront but allow ongoing use across years. Cosmetic procedures including whitening are generally not covered by dental insurance, so plan on this being out-of-pocket. CareCredit is available if you would rather spread the cost, subject to its own approval and terms. The front desk gives you a written estimate at your consultation so you can decide which option fits without any pressure.
Does teeth whitening damage your teeth?
Professional whitening done correctly is safe for tooth enamel. The whitening agent (carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide at clinical concentrations) breaks down stain molecules without weakening the tooth structure. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity to cold for a few days, which resolves on its own. The real risk is overuse, whitening multiple times per year, leaving gel in trays longer than recommended, or using over-the-counter products incorrectly can damage enamel and irritate gums. That's why we keep whitening supervised. Patients with existing enamel erosion, severe gum recession, or untreated cavities should address those first before whitening. We screen for these conditions at the pre-whitening exam.
How long do teeth whitening results last?
Results are case-dependent and fade gradually. The biggest factor is what you eat and drink: coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, berries, and tobacco all re-stain teeth over time. Patients who minimize these and rinse with water after consuming them keep results longer. The good news: maintenance is easy. Your custom trays can be reused with touch-up gel, which is usually simpler than starting over. Routine cleanings also remove surface staining as it builds.
Will whitening work on crowns, veneers, or fillings?
No, and this is the most important thing to understand before whitening. The whitening agent only affects natural tooth enamel, it does not change the color of crowns, veneers, bonded fillings, or any other dental restoration. If you whiten and have visible dental work, those restorations will look darker by contrast against the newly whitened natural teeth. For patients with significant existing dental work on front teeth, we discuss this clearly at the consultation. Often the best plan is to whiten first, then replace any front-tooth restorations to match the new shade, but this only makes sense if those restorations were already due for replacement. We never recommend replacing perfectly good dental work just to match a whitened shade.
Can over-the-counter whitening work as well as professional?
OTC whitening (drugstore strips, gels, mouthwashes, charcoal toothpastes) provides modest results for mild staining at lower cost than professional treatment. The trade-offs: the concentration of active whitening agent is significantly lower, the contact between gel and teeth is less precise, and there's no professional supervision if something goes wrong. The bigger concern with OTC products is misuse, extended wear, daily use beyond label instructions, and acid-based whiteners can cause enamel erosion and gum irritation that doesn't resolve on its own. If you've tried OTC and want better results, professional whitening is the predictable next step.
Is in-office or take-home whitening better?
Neither is universally better. They suit different goals. In-office whitening (one appointment with a stronger gel and the gums protected) gives the fastest visible result and is best if you have a specific event coming up or want the dramatic moment of seeing change happen in one visit. Custom take-home trays give a more gradual change on your own schedule, and the trays can be reused for touch-ups. If you are prone to sensitivity or on a tight timeline, say so at the consultation and we will recommend the route that fits. Some patients combine the two, in-office first for a fast lift, then take-home to push further or maintain. We recommend based on your specific situation at the consultation.
Do I need an exam before whitening?
Yes. A dentist checks for cavities, gum problems, and existing crowns or fillings first, because whitening does not change the color of dental work and should not be done over untreated problems.
Does dental insurance cover whitening?
Most dental plans treat whitening as cosmetic and do not cover it, but plans vary, so it is worth checking yours. Payment is due at the visit. Card, check, cash, and CareCredit are accepted, with CareCredit subject to its own approval and terms.
